I Used to Hate Artificial Grass. Here’s What Changed My Mind.

A landscaper and former greenkeeper on going from artificial grass sceptic to installing it for a living.

If anyone was going to be against artificial grass, it was me. I’m a landscaper by trade — I love plants, I love real grass, and I used to work as a green keeper. The idea of ripping out a natural lawn and replacing it with a synthetic one went against everything I knew.

So how did I end up installing it for a living?

Life changed everything

Just after Covid, my first daughter was born. Fast forward 18 months and there she was, running around the garden in the middle of January — except the garden was an absolute state. Muddy, patchy, churned up by our two dogs. It wasn’t a space she could enjoy — it was a mess.

That was the moment I pulled the plug and installed artificial grass. And I haven’t looked back since.

I never had time for the lawn I wanted

This one really got to me. As a former green keeper, I knew exactly what it took to create a perfect lawn — and that was the problem. I knew I didn’t have the time to do it properly. Long days on site, coming home to young kids, weekends swallowed up by family life. The lawn was always at the bottom of the list, and it showed. It drove me mad looking at it, knowing what it could be but never having the hours to get it there.

No more mud, no more guilt

Once the artificial grass went down, everything changed. My daughter could play outside whenever she wanted. The dogs weren’t dragging mud through the house. I wasn’t stressing about the state of the garden every time I looked out the window. It just looked good — all the time.

It looks great all year round

A natural lawn in January is never going to look its best. It’s either waterlogged, patchy, or brown. Now I look out at a perfectly green garden even when everything else is grey and miserable. For someone who takes pride in how things look, that matters.

It practically takes care of itself

No mowing, no feeding, no watering, no aerating. The odd brush and a rinse down is all it needs. For anyone juggling work and family life, that’s a massive win. I get my weekends back and the garden still looks spot on.

From sceptic to installer

I went from being the bloke who’d roll his eyes at artificial grass to running a business installing it. That doesn’t happen unless something properly wins you over. My background in landscaping and green keeping means I know what a great lawn should look and feel like — and the products available now genuinely deliver that.

If you’re where I was a few years ago — a bit unsure, maybe even against the idea — I’d say come and see one of our installations in person. It might just change your mind like it changed mine.
