What Actually Goes Into Installing Artificial Grass?

It is not just rolling out a green carpet. The nine steps of a professional Lawnify installation and why the groundwork underneath matters most.

A lot of people think laying artificial grass is as simple as rolling out a green carpet. The reality is quite different. A proper installation takes time, skill, and preparation — and it’s the groundwork underneath that makes all the difference between a lawn that looks incredible for years and one that wrinkles, drains badly, or falls apart after a season.

Here’s a look at what actually goes into a professional Lawnify installation.

Step 1 — Inspecting and Protecting the Edges

Before anything comes out, we inspect the existing borders, edging, and any surrounding features to make sure they’re protected throughout the installation. Whether it’s a fence line, flower bed, or patio edge, we make sure everything stays in great condition.

Step 2 — Removing the Existing Surface

The old lawn, turf, soil, or whatever’s currently there needs to come out. We remove the existing surface along with the root base, excavating to the right depth to allow for the full build-up of materials underneath.

Step 3 — Laying the Geotextile Membrane

A specialist geotextile membrane goes down first. This does two jobs — it stops weeds from growing through while still allowing water to drain freely, so you’ll never have pooling on the surface.

Step 4 — Building the Sub-Base

This is where the real foundation is built. We lay a heavy-duty aggregate base first, then top it with a finer sand aggregate which is levelled and compacted to create a perfectly smooth, flat surface. Getting this right is crucial for a finish that looks and feels natural.

Step 5 — Laying the Grass

Now the exciting part. Your chosen artificial grass is rolled out and carefully positioned to fit the exact shape of your garden. Every edge is measured and cut with precision to fit neatly around borders, flower beds, paths, or paving.

Step 6 — Joining and Seaming

For larger areas that need more than one roll, all seam joints are bonded together using specialist joining tape and adhesive. This ensures the joins are virtually invisible for a seamless finish.

Step 7 — Edging and Securing

How we finish the edges depends on your garden. If there’s an existing border or raised edge, we tuck the grass neatly underneath. Where there’s no natural edge, we pin the grass to a composite batten.

Step 8 — Infill and Brushing

Finally, a silica sand infill is spread across the surface and mechanically brushed into the pile. This stabilises the grass, helps the blades stand upright, and gives it that natural, realistic look and feel.

Step 9 — Clean Up

Once the job is done, we remove all waste materials and clean the surrounding areas so your garden is ready to enjoy straight away.

How Long Does It Take?

Most domestic installations take between one and two days depending on the size and complexity of the space. Larger or more complex jobs — like gardens with slopes, curves, or obstacles — may take a bit longer.

Why It’s Worth Getting It Done Professionally

Every garden is different — different surfaces, different shapes, different challenges. There’s no one-size-fits-all method, which is why experience matters. A professionally installed artificial lawn should last 15–20 years with minimal maintenance. No mowing, no watering, no mud — just a beautiful green space all year round.
